Young people’s counselling service

A young people’s counselling service is a positive place to get help for your child. Many children and teens have problems that affect how they feel and act, how they relate to friends and family, and even their ability to learn.

We offer counselling for young adults and a children’s therapy service here in Harrogate. Our children’s and young people’s counsellors are professionally trained with the relevant qualifications and membership registrations for this area of therapy.

Some of the questions parents and young people ask us before coming to counselling include:

What is child counselling?

Child counselling is a chance for kids of all ages to talk about and work out how to address their problems. It can help them to cope, communicate and learn.

When working with children and young people, counsellors will change their approach according to the child’s age. Younger children may benefit from having the whole family there, drawing, playing and talking. With older children and teens, counsellors can share activities and ideas that help to develop the skills needed to solve problems and talk through feelings.

Counselling can help the child to build their self-esteem and to develop healthy and helpful ways of thinking and behaving.

What problems can a child therapy service help with?

Child therapy services can help with a range of issues including family problems, school-based problems such as bullying, and mental and physical health issues.

Therapy for children and young people can help them deal with common feelings such as sadness or anger, and it can help them navigate periods of grief or stress and worry.

It can also help kids and teens with depression, anxiety, eating disorders, self-harming behaviours, ADHD, OCD and trauma-related disorders.

How can I support my child through therapy?

It can be really helpful to make a note of your concerns and times when your child has struggled with behaviours or feelings. This helps the therapist to fully understand your child’s situation.

You can also ask your therapist to explain what’s going to happen, how they work, and about their qualifications and experience. This will help to ensure that the therapist is a good fit.

Driving to appointments, taking part in sessions where appropriate, and offering your time to talk are all positive ways to support your young person as they go through their therapeutic journey.

Your child does not have to have a diagnosed mental health condition to benefit from counselling. Nonetheless, our practitioners are able to work with any current diagnosis your child may currently have.
