Counselling and talking therapy can be an effective way to resolve emotional problems and treat mental health conditions such as depression and anxiety.
By talking to a counsellor or therapist, either one-to-one, in a group or with a partner or family, our clients can look deeper into problems, worries, habits, behaviours and addictions. They can also seek support for a wide range of mental health issues.
We offer individual counselling here in Harrogate and the surrounding area. Our therapists are professionally trained with the relevant qualifications and membership registrations for their areas of therapy.
Some of the questions people ask us before coming along for in person counselling sessions include:
Which therapy is best for me?
There are many different individual therapies. The type used will depend on personal needs and which method the therapist thinks will be most helpful in resolving particular issues.
Some of the main types of therapy are:
Psychoanalytic psychotherapy – the therapist will encourage you to say whatever is going through your mind. This will help you become aware of patterns in what you do or say that may be contributing to your problems.
Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) – explores how your thoughts and beliefs may be causing emotional problems. Your therapist will support you in developing more helpful ways of thinking to overcome your problems.
Humanistic therapies – encourage you to explore how you think about yourself and recognise your strengths. The aim is to help you think about yourself more positively and improve your self-awareness.
Family and couple therapy – focuses on relationships such as marriage, and encourages everyone within the family or relationship to work together to fix problems. The therapist encourages discussions or exercises that involve everyone, and promotes a healthy unit as a way of improving mental health.
What are the goals for individual therapy?
One of the key objectives is to help you gain a better understanding of the issues that are troubling you. Individual therapy can help you work out new ways of approaching situations that you find difficult, as well as suggesting new methods to help you cope.
How many counselling sessions do I need?
There’s no definitive answer but as a guide, people usually meet their therapist regularly, often once a week, for several months, or sometimes even years. As a guide:
Brief therapy is usually 6 to 12 sessions
Longer term therapy is 12 or more sessions
It’s really important for clients to develop a trusting relationship with their therapist and this can take time. Having the option of brief and longer term approaches is really helpful in this respect.

I wish I had started these sessions many years ago. I have recommended the krysallis team to four of my friends and would wholeheartedly recommend them to anyone who is thinking of seeking support.
