Feeling Lost in Midlife? You May Be Standing at a Crossroads

Feeling unsettled in midlife does not necessarily mean that something has gone wrong. It can be a sign that your needs, priorities or sense of identity are changing.

In this article, Rebecca Bussy, BACP Accredited Psychotherapist and Counsellor at Krysallis, explores why midlife can feel like standing at a crossroads and how counselling can provide space to consider what comes next.

It’s something I hear surprisingly often in the counselling room.

People tell me that, on paper, life is good.

They have a loving partner. Their children are doing well. They have a comfortable home, good friends and interests they enjoy.

Then comes the “but”.

“But something doesn’t feel right.”

“But I don’t feel like myself.”

“But I can’t shake the feeling that something’s missing.”

What often follows is confusion. If life is good, why do they feel unsettled? Why can’t they simply appreciate what they have and get on with things?

The truth is that life doesn’t stop asking questions just because everything appears to be going well.

I often think of these moments as standing at a crossroads.

Life may be ticking along perfectly well on the outside, yet internally there is a growing sense that something has shifted. Sometimes that feeling arrives gradually. Sometimes it is triggered by a significant life event, such as children leaving home, retirement, bereavement, a relationship change or concerns about ageing.

These life transitions can prompt us to pause and reflect on the life we’ve lived so far and the life we want to live moving forward.

Why do so many people feel lost in midlife?

Questions begin to emerge.

Who am I now?

What matters most to me?

What do I want from the next chapter of my life?

Have I been living the life I truly want, or simply following the path that was expected of me?

These are not easy questions to sit with.

The familiar road behind is clear. The road ahead is less certain.

It can feel uncomfortable, unsettling and sometimes lonely.

Yet these crossroads are often not signs that something has gone wrong. They can be invitations to look inward and reconnect with ourselves. Opportunities to reflect on our values, priorities, identity and sense of purpose.

How counselling can help at a crossroads

As a counsellor, I don’t tell people which path to choose. My role is to walk alongside them as they navigate uncertainty, helping them make sense of what’s happening and reconnect with themselves.

Rather than offering advice or quick solutions, I believe people often already hold the capacity to find their own way forward. They just need the right space to explore it.

You don’t have to be in crisis to seek counselling. Sometimes it is enough to recognise that something feels different or that a question is asking to be explored.

If you’re feeling lost in midlife, struggling with a life transition or simply wondering what comes next, counselling can offer a safe, supportive space to pause, reflect and navigate the road ahead.

You don’t have to have all the answers. Sometimes the most important step is giving yourself permission to pause and become curious about what comes next.

Because perhaps you’re not lost at all. You’re simply standing at a crossroads.
