Juggling Relationships, Work-from-Home, and Family Life: Finding the Balance

Balancing a relationship while working from home and sharing the responsibilities of children is no small feat. The challenge lies in not only finding time for your partner but also managing work, parenting, and the never-ending house tasks — all without feeling constantly overwhelmed. We’ve written the top 3 tips from our Therapists to manage this juggle:

Time is finite but flexible. There are 168 hours in a week, and how we allocate them can profoundly impact our well-being. A useful starting point is to assess where your time goes. Tools like ‘time wheels’ can help you visualise this. Are you prioritising what matters the most? For instance, ringfencing time for family, relationships, or self-care ensures these important aspects don’t get lost in the shuffle.

Energy, not just time, is key. Tasks like housework or work calls can feel insurmountable if attempted during low-energy periods. Identify when your energy peaks — this is your best time for focused tasks or quality moments with your family. By contrast, low-energy periods are perfect for simpler chores.

Avoid reactive mode. Stress often pushes people into ‘crisis mode,’ where everything feels urgent, leading to a state of constant preoccupation. To break this cycle, create space to step back and assess priorities. Tools like Stephen Covey’s time management matrix can help distinguish what’s truly important versus what we might think is urgent.

Lastly, small but consistent changes to routines can make a big difference. Many of our clients have benefitted from reading Atomic Habits by James Clear, and 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Steven Covey.

Combining mindfulness, clarity, and actionable strategies ensures you’re not just juggling — but thriving. Balance isn’t perfect but it is possible.
