Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT)

Cognitive behavioural therapy is a talking therapy. Find out how it can help you to manage challenges and problems by changing the way that you think and behave.

CBT is most commonly used to treat anxiety and depression, but it can be useful for many mental and physical health problems. This list is my no means exhaustive, but CBT can help with; anxiety, panic, obsessive compulsive disorder, phobias, stress, depression, anger and low self-esteem.

CBT works by tackling overwhelming problems in a more positive way. You’ll be supported to break them down into smaller parts. It’s about changing negative patterns to improve the way you feel on a daily basis. Our CBT sessions in Harrogate, North Yorkshire are led by professionally trained therapists with relevant qualifications and membership registrations.

Our Cognitive Behavioural therapists work with you to look at how your thoughts, assumptions, beliefs and behaviours interact. And the impact that they have on your mood and emotions. For instance, it’s not necessarily events that upset us, but more the meanings that we attach to them.

One of the real benefits of CBT is that it teaches you useful and practical strategies that can be used in everyday life, even after the sessions have finished. It’s therapy for life.

Testimonial

“From the moment I emailed to see if krysallis could help me, I have felt listened to and understood. It was a big step for me to make, to ask for help, however looking back to where I was then to now, I feel like a different person. After the many sessions I have had, I now have a different, positive mindset on how to face life’s challenges and everyday situations along with various techniques to help me when needed. I cannot thank my therapist enough for what she has done and for what she has helped me see. I am ready to face everyday challenges myself with my virtual ‘tool box’ but with the comfort that my therapist is there if I ever need her in the future! Thank you so much!”

  • In your CBT sessions, you’ll work with a therapist to identify specific targets that you’d like to achieve. They’ll guide you in breaking down problems into separate parts, such as your thoughts, physical feelings and actions. You and your therapist will explore these areas to work out if they’re unrealistic, or unhelpful, and to determine the effect they have on you.
  • The underlying concept behind CBT is that thoughts and feelings play a fundamental role in behaviour. But once we understand this, we have options to change our response. CBT is also about showing you that whilst you can’t control many things in your life, you can control how you respond, interpret and deal with worries, issues or challenges.
  • First developed in the 1960s, cognitive behavioural therapy is one of the most well-studied forms of treatment. It’s particularly effective in treating anxiety, depression, eating disorders, insomnia, obsessive-compulsive disorder, panic disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, and substance use disorder.
